If there is very little sound and it is scratchy, buzzy, or it rattles in the low frequency range, then a low repair is necessary. We must receive both speakers from you so that we can match them both to the good one.
When the system is very dull sounding but most of the sound is acceptable, it usually indicates that a high repair is necessary. Sometimes this is only noticed when one speaker is compared to another. We must receive both of your drivers so that we can match them both to the good one.
Repair/Replace Metal Can
The metal can is the protective cover enclosing the driver. This should not be removed except at the Ohm factory. If third-party repairs are attempted, the final repair cost will be higher to fix whatever additional damage is done. However, a small cosmetic dent in the area opposite the wires will have no effect on the sound. These are sold and installed only at the factory after the drivers have been tested and found to be working properly.
The grill is the cloth and frame used to cosmetically conceal the drivers without affecting the sound. Ohm now uses black grills in almost all cases. In the past, brown and brown/black mixes were used. Now they are all black. The latest style uses wood and perforated metal like the thousand series. The new ones also have no seams. They are much nicer looking than the originals.
Replace Total Driver
The total driver is the perforated metal can including all its internal parts. This option is most often used to replace lost drivers. We still need to get the other one back to make sure they are properly matched.
Upgrade to S5.5000
The original Walsh 5s can be upgraded with the Walsh 5000. The main driver is replaced, including changing to our new surround projected to last up to 30 years. We also replace the super-tweeter from a metal dome to a cloth dome We provide new input boards without the controls (the 5000 drivers have the controls on their back side). The new super-tweeter can handle greater dynamic range and has wider dispersion.
Maintainence & Surround / pair
The original surrounds typically last 10 to 20 years while our new surrounds are projected to last up to 30 years. At the same time we upgrade the cone dampening. They give you better transition to the mid-range for smoother vocals. At the same time, we change the old dampening material on the inverted driver and re-balance the pair to ensure that they are properly matched and performing correctly.
The crossover is the electrical circuit that protects the tweeters from the low frequency energy that is reproduced by the main drivers. This can only fail, in rare instances, from overdriving the speakers.
Upgrade to Super 5.5015
The Walsh 5 can be upgraded to the Super 5.5015, which features a restricted-range version of the current Walsh 5000 driver on top, with a 15” Xtreme Xcursion subwoofer in the bottom of the same cabinet, driven by a dedicated subwoofer amp with 500 Watts per channel. This is a 20/20K design, covering the full range of human hearing. It reproduces deeper bass and higher treble than the Walsh 5 (The highs are the same as the current 5000.) and plays louder than the Walsh 5. This upgrade must be done at the factory, since it requires extensive modification to the cabinet, and comes in your choice of real wood veneers.

The Walsh 5 was the best speaker Ohm had made until 1998. It received praise in most of the audio press including Stereophile. On the front cover of Audio, they were called ”A Masterpiece of the Speaker Designer’s Art”. They could fill even large rooms with life-like reproduction.
We used real wood veneer cabinets with an Ohm logo in the lower center. There were three controls on the back, one to match the bass response to your room size (down for very small rooms, up for medium rooms and in the middle for small sized rooms); one to match the treble (increase for rooms with carpeting and over stuffed furniture, down for hard floors and no drapes, in the middle for average mixed rooms); and one to set the ”perspective” (forward brought the mid-range up slightly and recessed depressed it slightly).
The speakers drivers came as matched mirror image pairs. They should have labels identifying the left speaker and right speaker. The cabinets are interchangeable so it is important to have the drivers on the right side with the Ohm logos on the front. Placed eight to twelve feet apart and about one foot from the wall gives the smoothest bass and best imaging.
The Walsh 5 can be upgraded to the Super Walsh 5.5000 which uses our current top-of-the-line technology. We send you a new set of drivers and boards, new input terminals and internal hook-ups, and a vent adapter which you easily slide in place to tune the frequency of the cabinet lower. The entire process can be completed in under two hours in your home and requires no specialized knowledge. You can retain your old drivers for up to 60 days until you are fully satisfied with your upgrade; and rest assured that your better-than-new speakers are backed with our Three Year Limited Parts and Service Warrantee.
The Walsh 5.5015 upgrade is similar to the Walsh 5.5000 but with a 15" Xtreme Xcursion subwoofer in the bottom of the same cabinet, driven by a dedicated subwoofer amp with 500 Watts per channel. This is a 20/20K design, covering the full range of human hearing. It reproduces deeper bass and higher treble than the Walsh 5 (The highs are the same as the current 5000.) and plays much louder than the Walsh 5. This upgrade must be done at the factory, since it requires extensive modification to the cabinet, and comes in your choice of real wood veneers. You can still audition this upgrade with our 60-Day Home Trial and send back your speakers in the same packaging material we used to send you the new ones. All upgrades come with Ohm's 3-Year Limited Parts and Service Warrantee.
Note: Most Ohm upgrades require no specialized knowledge and are easily completed completed by any person. It takes less time to install your own upgrade than it does to package and return ship your speakers to the factory, therefore, we recommend you save time and money by doing this yourself. We ship the upgrade to your door with clear, easy instructions. If for any reason you prefer to have the factory complete your upgrade installation, we will be happy to do this for free, however, you will be responsible for shipping and handling costs each way.
Ohm allows up to $6995 for the return of a complete undamaged pair of Ohm Walsh5's toward 25% of the purchase price of new Ohm speakers.
