Ohm A

The Ohm A was one of our landmark speakers. The Klipschorn, Quad ESL and AR-1 are some others that come to mind. The Ohm A was a limited production series of hand made prototypes of Lincoln Walsh invention. The driver was 18” in diameter and operated from 20 - 20,000 Hz. Overall it was the size of a medium sized refrigerator. Power requirements were high as it sounded best with 350 plus watts, but could only handle about half of that safely.

When we completed the original Ohm Walsh 5, we compared it to our pair of Ohm As. With the Walsh 5’s bass control set at increase, perspective controls at mid and treble at decrease, the two systems sounded like one model. After 17 years of development we were right back where we started! Our improvements had not been in sound quality or quantity BUT we had improved sensitivity by 20 times, peak power head room by 2, reduced the size by 2, widened the sweet-spot by 12 and reduced the room placement fussiness.

Today we put the latest Walsh drivers on old Ohm A cabinets to gain deeper bass.

Upgrade to A5000

The A5000 upgrade uses your original Ohm A cabinets and installs our new top-of-the-line Walsh 5000 driver, a new mounting board with a vent plus new acoustically transparent black cloth grills. The sound is amazingly similar to the original As if you set the bass and mid-bass control to the maximum, mid-range control to the middle, and treble control to the lower position. These controls allow you to match the sonic character of your room as well as your taste. The entire conversion process takes about 1 hour. Good Listening!

Upgrade to A4000

The A400 works in large rooms. You retain your old Ohm A cabinets and receive new driver mounting boards, input terminals, grills and drivers. The overall performance is similar to the original As but require 1/10th the power. Because of the controlled dispersion, the Full Room Stereo effect is much more evident. Minor cabinet modifications are required.

Grill

The grill is the cloth and frame used to cosmetically conceal the drivers without affecting the sound. Ohm now uses black grills in almost all cases. In the past, brown and brown/black mixes were used; but every ”brown” turned out differently. Now they are all black (except on some current white speakers, we have white as an option).
